CAROLINA SIGBAUM - BAKETOPIA

Lady C Cakes — The Beginning

I never thought I would design cakes for a living, either baking or teaching! I grew up with a single mom who was a tailor, but surrounded by a big family with my grandparents, cousins, aunts, and uncles.

I was born in Uruguay and raised in a small city in the South of Argentina. Food is very important in our culture. We have a tradition, as many European countries do, of having an “afternoon tea” called a “merienda”, where for sure you’ll have some pastries or sweets along with it.

It was a tradition that at my grandmother she would wait for her grandkids with a homemade pastry with hot chocolate during winter and a fruit smoothie for summer. Always homemade, always fresh, and always delicious!

Little did I know when I was a kid, my aunts and my mom were all amazing cooks and bakers. I have had the pleasure to share my passion with one of my aunts and one of my cousins, who both turned to this path of baking and cake decorating (both who still live in Argentina).

I remember watching my aunt making cakes and admiring her intricate work, the satisfying mix of ingredients and the amazing combination of flavors to create something special for a celebration. I realized I wanted to do the same for my own children to help them celebrate their birthdays! Three daughters later, after a few birthday parties, and lots of friends complimenting my baking skills, I started to teach myself on how to make the perfect cakes. I developed different decorating techniques, and I opened my home bake business in 2012, starting at first with only making cupcakes. I still remember my first order; it was one dozen of cupcakes, and it took me forever to do it, but I wanted to make it perfect. A few months later, I was making batches of hundreds of cupcakes for different events, TV shows and celebrations.

I learned to work in a fast-paced environment and be precise with my designs. I learned the fundamentals of baking involve dedication, hard work and lots and lots of practice. My goal is always to make a product delightful in taste and appearance.

As my experience grew, I started to meet and learn about so many incredibly talented people in this industry that constantly inspired me to create new recipes, new techniques, to grow as a business and to offer more and better options to my clients.

After a few years of making cakes professionally out of my cottage business in Santa Monica-California, I was invited to do some TV show appearances and cake competitions, which have further shaped my journey. Here I met many amazing people, all sharing my passion for the art of baking. I had the pleasure to be asked to train some beginning bakers, where they developed a relaxed attitude under pressure. They had some amazing experiences involving TV based cake competitions, where they later won!

I have to say that even that this business is made with so much hard work, dedication and responsibility. The reward of seeing the excitement of people witnessing a cake created by my own hands is priceless and worthwhile.

I truly believe that these are not just cakes, they are a story that somebody wants to tell: memories honoring a mom turning 100 years old, the cuteness and love to given to your child with their favorites in a sweet form, the celebration of love when a couple starts their new journey together, the welcoming of a new life in this world, and so many other celebrations. All have a story behind it that I treasure for each client, putting my soul into creating the best cake for their event.

I not only create cakes, I create unforgettable memories and it is truly an honor to be able to be part of this! Born in Uruguay, and taught by her grandmother, Carolina opened her home bake business in 2012. She has been featured in many TV shows and cake competitions. In addition to creating amazing cake designs for celebrations, she now shares her baking secrets and techniques though an Educational Step by Step video series.
